La firme d’ingénierie Mol innove! “La nouvelle génération de travailleurs sur le terrain passe au numérique”
If you want to stand out against the competition, you should also act as a pioneer. That’s Remco Gardien’s belief, managing director at Engineering Firm Mol. “And that’s the way we do it! Whether it is about soil and asbestos survey, sampling of dredging spoil, compost examinations, groundwater monitoring, granulate analyses for recycling or advisory reports as a result.” Gardien tells us Mol started a while ago with digitalizing most of the processes and he mentions that the new TerraIndex-app fits right in considering the roadmap of this company. “You should try to think about how much has changed the last few years and try to imagine how the world will look in ten years. You have to accept and implement innovations, because if you don’t it will be game over soon.”
Work changes
Gardien entered the firm in ’95 as a fieldworker and through the years he has experienced changes in activities within all levels of the organisation. “Back in the days we still used to work in the field with field computers and Psions and you had to fill in a form all the way from the beginning again in case of a typo. Of course that was very frustrating, but that simply was the way things worked. Well, nowadays this is not how it works. The new generation of fieldworkers goes digital and expects intuitive tools. So if you want to attract the best people in the industry, you should invest in this.”
Crucial for quality of service
With his current role as managing director he considers the possibilities of digitalization or even automation of the process – from assignment to delivery of the report – on a daily basis. “For that matter, the app is one of the pieces of this puzzle. As a matter of fact quite an important one, because according to me thorough fieldwork still forms the basis of a solid advisory report. And it is determinative for the speed and quality of our service to local authorities, companies and individuals. Thanks to the new lay out of the TerraIndex-app it is easier for fieldworkers to enter data and from now on they can of course send drilling data to the office from anywhere at any time with a single click.”
Cooperation in the industry
Since engineering firm Mol frequently seconds fieldworkers at partner firms in the world of soil survey, Gardien regularly looks at the entire industry with an helicopter view. “And I see great advantages if all fieldwork firms, laboratories and consultancy firms will work with the same system. Why wouldn’t we take advantages of the possibilities cloud technologies and applications can offer us nowadays?”
The managing director refers to the fact that in that case everyone would work with the same definitions, numbers and forms and the synchronization of drilling data in the systems of every party. “Honestly I think there is way more potential in the new app of TerraIndex. And I know they are working everyday trying to improve the functionality within the app or developing a new one. Furthermore they organise “Expertgroup Sessions” regularly, which allow firms to contribute in the discussion about possible improvement points. I am a supporter of these kinds of initiatives, because like I said in the beginning already: if you want to stand out against the competition, you should act like a pioneer and contribute to the discussion about the future.”
