Testing and improving: the internal TerraIndex Field test day

Mar 17, 2025 3 min read

When developing TerraIndex Field, we test the app extensively with end users in the field. They work with soil investigations every day and give us valuable feedback on how the app performs in practice. We also held an internal test day at the office. This helps us improve both the app and the practical tests with end users, so we can get as much as possible out of them. The day’s findings were acted on immediately. What does an internal test day involve?

During our internal test day, the entire team worked with TerraIndex Field, including colleagues who do not normally use the app directly, such as our office manager. This gives us a fresh perspective on how intuitive it is. Without prior knowledge, they test whether the features work logically and important information is easy to find. They also check that everything works correctly and no problems arise. Any unusual behaviour or suggestions are recorded immediately.

Meanwhile, the developers are ready to look at issues directly and make improvements where needed. This allows us to respond quickly and fix bugs immediately.

Why hold an internal test day?

TerraIndex Field is mainly tested with end users. They are the people who will use it, and it must fit their needs and work. Nevertheless, an internal test day has several benefits:

  • A fresh look at intuitiveness: colleagues who do not normally use the app, such as our office manager, test how logical and user-friendly the interface is without prior knowledge.
  • Fast feedback and immediate improvements: with developers and testers together in one room, bugs can be fixed and improvements tested immediately.
  • Preparing for field tests: internal testing helps us refine our tests and prepare better for sessions with end users. We know what to look for and which questions to ask.
  • Involvement of the whole team: everyone in our software company contributes to improving the app. This strengthens both the product and our collaboration.

What did it achieve?

Our internal test day had an immediate impact. These were the main results:

  • Bugs identified and fixed: testing and making changes immediately made the app even more stable.
  • Improved usability: small changes can make a big difference to how easy the app is to use.
  • New ideas for future updates: some suggestions were so valuable that we will develop them further.
  • Better preparation for field tests: this session helped us determine which questions to ask end users and which points need extra attention.

Our internal test day is a valuable complement to practical tests with end users. Together, they help ensure TerraIndex Field is stable, intuitive and efficient for real work in the field.
